Sony Admits PlayStation Live Service Game Strategy Is Not Going Well
United Gaming – Sony PlayStation has a strong lineup of exclusive titles for its consoles. However, several of them are Live Service games, which have shown mixed results. For example, Helldivers 2 achieved notable success, yet Concord failed to gain traction. Recently, Sony openly admitted that its Live Service strategy for PlayStation has not gone as planned.
In an interview with ThisWeekInVideoGames, Lin Tao, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, discussed their commitment to Live Service games. He explained that the plan was to balance these games with story-rich single-player titles. Nevertheless, the approach has failed to deliver the expected results. In fact, PlayStation Studios leadership had promised this balanced release strategy back in late 2024, yet the execution has been challenging.
Moreover, Lin Tao addressed the negative feedback surrounding Marathon, a title developed by Bungie, now part of PlayStation Studios. Since the game has faced delays, he worries it could suffer the same fate as Concord. Furthermore, he pointed out that just five years ago, Live Service games were rare in PlayStation Studios’ portfolio, showing how much the focus has shifted.
Despite the setbacks, Sony still holds four strong Live Service titles: Helldivers 2, MLB The Show, Gran Turismo 7, and Destiny 2. These games not only provide consistent sales but also maintain loyal player bases. Consequently, they continue to be key contributors to PlayStation’s revenue stream.
Lin Tao also explained that Live Service titles can generate up to 40% of revenue in the first quarter. Over the course of a full year, their contribution typically ranges from 20–30%. Therefore, while the overall strategy has faltered, their importance to the company’s financial performance remains significant.
Ultimately, Lin Tao admitted that Sony’s Live Service strategy has underperformed over the past five years. He emphasized that the gaming industry is undergoing major changes. As a result, adapting quickly to these shifts will be crucial for ensuring PlayStation’s long-term success.
