United Gaming – Roblox bans kids under 13 from chatting with strangers as part of its latest safety updates. These changes are designed to address concerns about how young users interact within the platform and ensure a safer online environment for children.
Starting this week, Roblox has restricted direct messaging (DMs) for users under 13. Young players can no longer send DMs outside game experiences unless they have explicit parental approval. This policy aims to prevent minors from sharing personal information or being exposed to inappropriate interactions.
The changes will be fully implemented across all platforms by the first quarter of 2025. This decision follows multiple reports highlighting the platform’s challenges in safeguarding its younger audience. For instance, investigations by Bloomberg and Hindenburg Research revealed cases of predators using Roblox’s chat features to target children.

In addition to chat restrictions, Roblox is introducing parental accounts that give caregivers more control. These accounts will allow parents to manage screen time, monitor gameplay, and oversee their children’s activities. Previously, parental controls required direct access to a child’s account, making the process less convenient.
Roblox is also shifting from age ratings to content labels for its games. This means that children under 9 will only have access to experiences with minimal content risks unless parents explicitly allow more. Additionally, users under 13 are now restricted from accessing hangout-style games or freeform creative features like drawing and writing.
Roblox has faced criticism for its child safety measures for years. In response, the platform has implemented new policies to improve parental oversight and protect young users. For instance, Roblox requires parental consent for users under 13 to access features involving moderate violence or edgy humor.
However, these measures haven’t entirely eliminated concerns. Bloomberg reported lawsuits against Roblox for alleged exploitation of minors, dating back to 2022. Furthermore, Sony has hesitated to host Roblox on its platforms, citing fears that it could expose children to inappropriate content. Similarly, Turkish authorities banned the game in early 2024 over similar concerns.

Investigations have revealed alarming cases of predatory behavior on Roblox. Bloomberg Businessweek uncovered instances where U.S. law enforcement arrested over two dozen individuals since 2018 for abusing or kidnapping children they met through the platform. Hindenburg Research also reported financial misconduct and predatory activities within Roblox, although the organization has faced credibility challenges.
Roblox’s latest updates are part of its broader efforts to rebuild trust among parents and create a safer online space for its young users. With these changes, the platform aims to minimize risks and foster a positive gaming environment for children.
